So I am seeing tons of people throwing this game under the bus. I watched a few streamers playing it and honestly, it is a free game so I don't think people should be complaining THIS much but the game is nothing that interests me. It feels almost soulless and boring. I can't quite figure it out.
At release I think it has something like 90k players and before the first 24 hours period ended, it dropped to 16k.
The same people that worked on the Concord game that flopped hard worked on this and it kind of shows. The graphics aren't great. The designs, especially for the guns, seem rushed and uncreative. It almost feels like AI made this game.
As I said, I have no interest. I still enjoy Apex Legends. Has anyone played it here?
I think it got off to a bad start when it was the final reveal at the '25 The Game Awards. That immediately puts higher expectations on something and Highguard doesn't seem like it excels at or revolutionizes anything.
I've played it a fair bit and I do think there are some valid, but fixable criticisms. Among them, I think the maps might be a touch to large. I actually like that there is this ebb and flow of 'Resource Gathering phase' and 'Intense Fighting phase' and it does move the need a fair bit on the genre in a good way, but I also see why people may not care for that.
If I were to point to a specific critical flaw, I think I'd say the characters are bad. These are not interesting characters that are unique or cool or stand out. I think for a game like this, you gotta love the characters to some degree, and if you are just playing, 'some guy #429', then you lose a lot of the audience. Say what you will about Overwatch, but they made some real, real good characters and it's paid dividends for the game.
Regardless, I think the game is actually rather good in a lot of ways. It has some issues in it's game loop, but I think the characters are it's biggest problem.
I like to be fair for games if they are free. I did give it a try. I wanted to like it but It took ages to find a match. I am talking like 30+ minutes. I finally got in one and not even 2 minutes into the match, one of my teammates left. Also, the start of the match is so slow paced that I just lost interest. I am sure this kind of game appeals to someone but not me. I like more face-paced FPS games. Like Apex Legends.
